Cimino’s Pizza Bar: A Legacy Spanning Continents

Every great establishment has its roots, its origin story that sets the tone for its future. Cimino's Pizza Bar is no different. Let’s take a nostalgic walk down memory lane.

A Love Story That Started it All

In the quaint town of Leighton Buzzard, England, 1964, a simple photograph would change the destinies of two families. Francis Salamone showed Antonino Cimino a photograph of his sister, Domenica, a beautiful young woman from Sicily. It was love at first sight. In an era where arranged marriages were common, Antonino flew to Sicily, and the two families met for the first time. Their bond was undeniable, and on November 6, 1966, Antonino and Domenica exchanged their vows.

Relocating to Leighton Buzzard, they soon welcomed three blessings - Nicolo, Salvatore, and Vincenzo. Their journey took another turn when in 1973, the family made the big move to Rockford, Illinois, and shortly after, their youngest, Pietro, was born.

Beginning of a Culinary Legacy

While Antonino worked diligently at the Rockford Factory Gunite, the Cimino boys brought their family’s traditional pizzas and Italian dishes to their workplace. The aroma and authentic flavors soon caught the attention of their colleagues. Requests poured in, and before they knew it, Domenica, affectionately known as Mimi, along with her sisters-in-law, began catering lunches. Word spread like wildfire throughout Rockford about the delectable Italian dishes crafted by the Cimino family.

1975 marked a milestone when Vince inaugurated the first ever Cimino’s Pizza in Loves Park, IL. This ristorante was just the beginning. With Frank Cimino setting up in Pecatonica and Tony in Freeport, the Cimino’s chain began to flourish. By 1977, Freeport had its very own Cimino’s. Under the watchful eyes of Tony, the brothers honed their skills, absorbing lessons on perfection, product quality, and impeccable service.

Triumph Over Tragedy

1985 was a devastating year for the Ciminos as they faced the tragic loss of Tony. However, his teachings and legacy lived on. Nicolo, Salvatore, Vincenzo, and Pietro pledged to honor their father’s memory. This commitment was only strengthened with the passing of Domenica "Mama" Cimino in 2017, following her valiant fight against cancer. They were resolute to uphold the values, traditions, and recipes their parents cherished.

"No One Cooks Like Mama"

Mama Cimino’s pizza has been tantalizing taste buds since 1977. From its humble beginnings, it has expanded, bringing the unique Cimino flavor to communities far and wide, including the latest establishment on 310 E. Warm Springs Road in Las Vegas, Nevada. Every bite at Cimino's speaks of their unwavering commitment to quality, a sentiment best captured by their motto: "No one cooks like Mama."
